SoFi and Payward Tie 24/7 Dollar Settlement to Kraken
The pact gives Kraken institutions round-the-clock dollar settlement and SoFi another crypto-liquidity route, but adoption and execution gains remain unproven.
SoFi and Payward agreed on September 3 to connect SoFi’s round-the-clock dollar-settlement network with Kraken’s trading infrastructure, giving Kraken institutions another way to fund and settle while making SoFi more dependent on an outside execution venue. The three-part pact puts Payward on the SoFi Exchange Network, or SEN; sends some SoFi crypto order flow to Kraken Prime; and places SoFiUSD on Kraken. It is a meaningful plumbing upgrade for builders that need bank money and crypto liquidity in the same operating window, but the companies disclosed neither launch volumes nor financial terms.
How will the SoFi and Payward partnership work?
The partnership joins three distinct functions rather than creating one new payment rail. SEN handles real-time U.S.-dollar clearing and settlement for eligible institutional clients, Kraken Prime supplies another route for SoFi’s digital-asset trades, and SoFiUSD provides a tokenized dollar instrument that Kraken plans to list.
- Funding: Payward joins SEN and gains access to SoFi’s Big Business Banking capabilities.
- Execution: SoFi can route crypto orders through Kraken Prime as an additional liquidity source.
- Token settlement: Kraken will list SoFiUSD, which SoFi says is redeemable one-for-one for U.S. dollars.
- Custody: Qualified custody may be added later; it is not part of the announced initial capability.
These pieces solve different timing problems. A dollar transfer supplies cash, an execution venue converts that cash into an asset, and custody determines where that asset sits afterward. Connecting them can reduce prefunding and weekend liquidity buffers, but it does not make bank settlement and blockchain finality identical.
What changes for Kraken and SoFi customers?
Kraken’s eligible institutional clients gain the clearest new capacity: they can move dollars and manage liquidity through SEN outside conventional banking hours. That matters because crypto markets trade continuously while many dollar rails and treasury teams still run on narrower schedules.
For SoFi members, the visible promise is better trade pricing from adding Kraken Prime to the app’s existing liquidity stack. Kraken says its smart-order router compares price and depth across supported venues, but an extra route is only an input to better execution, not proof of it. The announcement offered no spread, slippage, fill-rate or uptime data, so any customer benefit remains an expected outcome rather than an observed one.
The arrangement also gives SoFiUSD distribution beyond SoFi’s own products. Listing is not the same as adoption: market makers need inventory, users need a reason to hold or transfer the token, and redemption must remain reliable during volatile periods.
Why does the 24/7 settlement link matter for builders?
The practical gain is operational: developers serving exchanges, brokers or treasury desks can design workflows around a banking counterparty that remains available when crypto markets move. SoFi introduced Big Business Banking in April as a regulated platform for fiat and digital assets; the Payward agreement applies that model to a large trading venue rather than merely adding another named participant.
That is more useful than a generic partnership announcement because it links funding, execution and a bank-issued stablecoin. Still, it does not remove counterparty, compliance or liquidity risk. Builders must know which clients qualify, what limits and fees apply, how SEN behaves during stress, and whether the Kraken Prime route measurably improves fills.
Verdict: The connection is important infrastructure, not yet evidence of important usage. Its value will be proven by settlement volume, stablecoin depth and execution-quality reporting; without those disclosures, the biggest unknown is whether institutions adopt the rail broadly enough to justify building around it.
