SyncSwap Range Pools Bring Uniswap V3 Logic to ZKsync
SyncSwap’s Range Pools reuse concentrated-liquidity mechanics, but their real distinction is routing beside three alternative pool models on one DEX.
SyncSwap’s Range Pools apply the same core wager as Uniswap V3—let liquidity providers choose where their capital trades—but their meaningful difference is architectural, not mathematical. Launched with SyncSwap V3 on January 1, 2025, the model joined Classic, Stable and Aqua pools behind one exchange interface and router. That makes Range Pools less a new concentrated-liquidity primitive than a way to place it beside alternative invariants on ZKsync.
What does a SyncSwap Range Pool do?
A Range Pool lets an LP set lower and upper prices for deployed liquidity, concentrating funds where trades are expected instead of spreading them across every possible price. Within that band, the same deposit can offer more usable depth than a full-range constant-product position. The SyncSwap developer portal and protocol reference describes Range Pools as one of four pool models rather than the exchange’s sole liquidity engine.
- A narrow range supplies greater depth near the current price, but it can fall out of range quickly.
- A wider range stays active through larger moves, while diluting capital efficiency and fee share.
- When price leaves the selected band, the position stops serving swaps and ends up entirely in one asset until price returns or the LP repositions.
This is the same economic bargain Uniswap V3 introduced: LPs exchange passive, always-on coverage for control over inventory and price exposure. Concentration does not remove impermanent loss; it changes how rapidly inventory is converted as price moves.
The router is the real point of departure
Uniswap V3 organizes concentrated liquidity into separate pools with fee tiers, while each LP position carries its own range. SyncSwap adds that model to a modular venue where its router can evaluate Range, Classic, Stable and Aqua liquidity. A trader therefore need not decide that concentrated liquidity is always the appropriate curve; routing can select among pool types and combine steps.
That can produce better execution when one model has deeper usable liquidity for a given trade. It can also fragment deposits among pool types. The design creates an opportunity for competition between curves, not proof that SyncSwap quotes beat Uniswap V3.
Who pays for the added efficiency?
Traders pay the pool’s swap fee and price impact; active LPs receive the applicable fee share, while protocols may take a configured portion. The less visible bill lands on Range Pool LPs: monitoring, repositioning, transaction fees and adverse inventory selection when informed flow trades against a stale range.
Uniswap V3’s mature position tooling and standardized fee tiers make that workload familiar. SyncSwap’s potential advantage is cheaper repositioning on a rollup and access to several pool models through one routing system. Whether those savings outweigh thinner liquidity or different fee settings is pair-specific, not a protocol-wide fact.
A credible comparison needs matched trades
The defensible verdict is that Range Pools bring proven Uniswap V3-style capital allocation into a broader routing design, but do not improve the underlying LP trade-off. To test execution, compare same-pair, same-size swaps at the same block-time window and record net output after swap fees, price impact and gas. To test LP performance, value fees plus ending inventory against holding the starting assets, then subtract repositioning costs.
Those measurements require on-chain pool states and transaction logs; total value locked alone cannot establish depth at the active price. Until matched results show otherwise, SyncSwap’s innovation is venue composition. The possible gain is sharper routing across specialized curves. The observed cost remains the same one Uniswap V3 made explicit: capital efficiency is purchased with range risk and active management.
